How to customize your Mac OS desktop background

Are you bored of your desktop background and want to set a new picture? We’ll show you some useful functions with which you can customize your background and screensaver to suit your personal preferences.

You can choose to use one of the many pre-installed images as your desktop background, or you can use your own. If a single picture is too boring for you, you can also let your Mac automatically switch between different Mac OS background images.

You also have the option of setting up a screensaver. Nowadays this is no longer used to protect the monitor, but is also well suited for personalizing your system. Apple offers you some ready-made animations, but you can also have your own pictures flicker across the screen as a slide show.

In the following steps, we will show you how you can set up and adjust the MAC background and MAC screensaver.

Customize the desktop background

Change Mac OS wallpaper

1-Click on the right mouse button on your desktop and then select the item “Change desktop background …”.

2- You are now in the system settings for the background image and screen saver.

3- To choose a different background image, simply click on the desired image. You can switch between the different sources via the sidebar.

4- If you want to use a background image from a previously unused directory, you have to add it up first. You Can do this by clicking on the “+” button at the bottom left.

Activate scaling and automatic change

Select Dynamic in the drop-down box which is shown under Desktop section.

5- If you click on the drop-down list at the top left of the background image preview, you can also specify how the selected image should be scaled. You can choose between “Fill Screen”, “Fit to Screen”, “Stretch to Fill Screen”, “Center” and “Tile”.

6- If you don’t want to constantly look at the same background image, you can also activate the automatic change.

7- By clicking on the adjacent drop-down list, you can also choose how often the background image should be changed.

Set up a screen saver

Activate and configure the screen saver

In order to adjust the screen saver, you would first need to switch to the corresponding settings. To do this, simply click on the “Screen Saver” tab.

For the screen saver, you can either use an animation provided by Apple, or you can display pictures in a slide show.

And if you want to use a slide show as a screen saver, you could select the style you want in the left sidebar.

Then click on the drop-down list next to Source to choose which images should be used. You can either choose one of four standard collections or use one of your directories.

If you prefer to use an animation as a screensaver, you can also select it from the left sidebar. The animations provided by Apple are at the end of the list. If you want to be surprised, you can also select the “random” type here.

At the bottom of the screen saver options, you can finally select when the screen saver should start and whether the current time (mac screensaver clock) should also be displayed.
