Key Verses

1. 12:53Yusuf
   ۞وَمَآ أُبَرِّئُ نَفۡسِيٓۚ إِنَّ ٱلنَّفۡسَ لَأَمَّارَةُۢ بِٱلسُّوٓءِ إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّيٓۚ إِنَّ رَبِّي غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞ
   I do not exculpate myself. Lo! the (human) soul enjoineth unto evil, save that whereon my Lord hath mercy. Lo! my Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.
   In context

   The minister’s wife continued speaking, saying that she was not free of blame from having wanted to do something bad, and she was not trying to justify herself, because the human self commands often to evil.

2. 79:40An-NaziatCommand
   وَأَمَّا مَنۡ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفۡسَ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰ
   But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his soul from lust,
   In context

   & 41. And as for the one who feared his standing before his Lord and stopped himself from following his desires that were made impermissible by Allah, then Paradise is his abode he will take shelter towards.

3. 79:41An-Naziat
   فَإِنَّ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ هِيَ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ
   Lo! the Garden will be his home.
   In context

   & 41. And as for the one who feared his standing before his Lord and stopped himself from following his desires that were made impermissible by Allah, then Paradise is his abode he will take shelter towards.

4. 91:7Ash-Shams
   وَنَفۡسٖ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا
   And a soul and Him Who perfected it
   In context

   He also takes an oath on each soul, with Allah having created it equally.

5. 91:8Ash-Shams
   فَأَلۡهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقۡوَىٰهَا
   And inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it.
   In context

   Then He made it understand - without teaching it - what was evil so it could be abstained from, and what was good so it could be implemented.

6. 91:9Ash-Shams
   قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا
   He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow,
   In context

   Verily, the one who has purified his soul by adorning it with virtuous characteristics and freeing it from evil traits, has succeeded.

7. 91:10Ash-ShamsCommand
   وَقَدۡ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا
   And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it.
   In context

   And verily the one who has secretly thrust his soul into sins and disobedience, has lost.
