- 11:116HudWarningفَلَوۡلَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡقُرُونِ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ أُوْلُواْ بَقِيَّةٖ يَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنِ ٱلۡفَسَادِ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِلَّا قَلِيلٗا مِّمَّنۡ أَنجَيۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡۗ وَٱتَّبَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ مَآ أُتۡرِفُواْ فِيهِ وَكَانُواْ مُجۡرِمِينَIf only there had been among the generations before you men possessing a remnant (of good sense) to warn (their people) from corruption in the earth, as did a few of those whom We saved from them! The wrong-doers followed that by which they were made sapless, and were guilty.In context
If only there were, among the communities who were punished before you, remnants of the people of virtue and piety who prohibited those communities from disbelief and from corruption on earth through sins. But there were no such remnants among them, except for a few of them who used to prohibit corruption and whom I saved when I destroyed their people who did wrong.
- 17:16Al-IsraCommandوَإِذَآ أَرَدۡنَآ أَن نُّهۡلِكَ قَرۡيَةً أَمَرۡنَا مُتۡرَفِيهَا فَفَسَقُواْ فِيهَا فَحَقَّ عَلَيۡهَا ٱلۡقَوۡلُ فَدَمَّرۡنَٰهَا تَدۡمِيرٗاAnd when We would destroy a township We send commandment to its folk who live at ease, and afterward they commit abomination therein, and so the Word (of doom) hath effect for it, and we annihilate it with complete annihilation.In context
When I decided to destroy a town because of its wrongdoing, I instructed those who became reckless because of affluence, to obey Allah but they did not comply. And instead they disobeyed Him and transgressed, so the word of the decimating punishment became justified against them and I destroyed them completely.
- 19:80MaryamNarrativeوَنَرِثُهُۥ مَا يَقُولُ وَيَأۡتِينَا فَرۡدٗاAnd We shall inherit from him that whereof he spake, and he will come unto Us, alone (without his wealth and children).In context
I shall inherit the wealth and children he leaves behind after I destroy him, and he will come to Us on the Day of Judgement all alone, with the wealth and fame that he enjoyed having been taken away from him.
- 21:13Al-AnbiyaConsolationلَا تَرۡكُضُواْ وَٱرۡجِعُوٓاْ إِلَىٰ مَآ أُتۡرِفۡتُمۡ فِيهِ وَمَسَٰكِنِكُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُسۡـَٔلُونَ(But it was said unto them): Flee not, but return to that (existence) which emasculated you and to your dwellings, that ye may be questioned.In context
They were being called mockingly: “Do not flee, but return to your enjoyment of luxuries which you were in and to your homes, so that you can be questioned somewhat regarding your worldly possessions”.
- وَقَالَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ مِن قَوۡمِهِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَكَذَّبُواْ بِلِقَآءِ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ وَأَتۡرَفۡنَٰهُمۡ فِي ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا مَا هَٰذَآ إِلَّا بَشَرٞ مِّثۡلُكُمۡ يَأۡكُلُ مِمَّا تَأۡكُلُونَ مِنۡهُ وَيَشۡرَبُ مِمَّا تَشۡرَبُونَAnd the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter, and whom We had made soft in the life of the world, said: This is only a mortal like you, who eateth of that whereof ye eat and drinketh of that ye drink.In context
The noblemen and leaders from his people who disbelieved in Allah, rejected the Hereafter and the punishment and reward to be meted out in it, and were misled by the blessings I had granted them in the world, said to their followers and masses, “This is a human just like you are: he eats of the food you eat and drinks of the drinks you drink.
- 23:55Al-MuminunConsolationأَيَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّمَا نُمِدُّهُم بِهِۦ مِن مَّالٖ وَبَنِينَThink they that in the wealth and sons wherewith We provide themIn context
Do these self-conceited groups think that whatever wealth and offspring we bestow them with in the world, is a prelude of good they deserve? It is not as they think; I am only giving it to them as respite, gradually leading them into destruction, but they do not realise it.
- 23:64Al-MuminunWarningحَتَّىٰٓ إِذَآ أَخَذۡنَا مُتۡرَفِيهِم بِٱلۡعَذَابِ إِذَا هُمۡ يَجۡـَٔرُونَTill when We grasp their luxurious ones with the punishment, behold! they supplicate.In context
Until when I punish those among them who lived in luxury in the world with the punishment on the Day of Judgment, they shall raise their voices calling out for help.
- 34:34SabaWarningوَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا فِي قَرۡيَةٖ مِّن نَّذِيرٍ إِلَّا قَالَ مُتۡرَفُوهَآ إِنَّا بِمَآ أُرۡسِلۡتُم بِهِۦ كَٰفِرُونَAnd We sent not unto any township a warner, but its pampered ones declared: Lo! we are disbelievers in that wherewith ye have been sent.In context
I have not sent a messenger in any city to warn of Allah’s punishment except that the affluent people in it amongst those of power, fame and wealth said: “We are of what you have been sent with, O messengers, disbelievers”.
- 43:23Az-ZukhrufWarningوَكَذَٰلِكَ مَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ فِي قَرۡيَةٖ مِّن نَّذِيرٍ إِلَّا قَالَ مُتۡرَفُوهَآ إِنَّا وَجَدۡنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا عَلَىٰٓ أُمَّةٖ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَٰرِهِم مُّقۡتَدُونَAnd even so We sent not a warner before thee (Muhammad) into any township but its luxurious ones said: Lo! we found our fathers following a religion, and we are following their footprints.In context
And just as these people have lied and used the blind following of their forefathers as evidence, O Messenger, I did not send any messenger to any community before you, except that those living in luxury in that village said, “Indeed, we found our forefathers upon a belief, and we are following in their footsteps”, so your nation is not any different in that regard.
- 56:45Al-WaqiahNarrativeإِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ قَبۡلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتۡرَفِينَLo! heretofore they were effete with luxuryIn context
Indeed, before they came to the punishment, they were enjoying the luxuries in the world, caring only for their desires.
- وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالٗا مَّمۡدُودٗاAnd then bestowed upon him ample means,In context
I gave him plenty wealth.
- وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِيدٗاAnd made (life) smooth for him.In context
I extended to him his livelihood, provision and children profusely.
