About Surah Al-Ala

Al-A'la opens by instructing the Prophet to glorify the name of his Lord, the Most High, who creates, proportions, guides, and brings forth vegetation before turning it to stubble — imagery of both provision and impermanence. It reassures the Prophet that he will not forget the revelation given to him except as God wills, and contrasts those who purify themselves and remember God with those who prefer the fleeting life of this world over the lasting one to come.

1
سَبِّحِ ٱسۡمَ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡأَعۡلَى
Sabbihisma Rabbikal A'laa
Praise the name of thy Lord the Most High,
Divine Glorification and Spiritual Elevation
Tafseer
2
ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ
Allazee khalaqa fasawwaa
Who createth, then disposeth;

3
وَٱلَّذِي قَدَّرَ فَهَدَىٰ
Wallazee qaddara fahadaa
Who measureth, then guideth;

4
وَٱلَّذِيٓ أَخۡرَجَ ٱلۡمَرۡعَىٰ
Wallazeee akhrajal mar'aa
Who bringeth forth the pasturage,

5
فَجَعَلَهُۥ غُثَآءً أَحۡوَىٰ
Faja'alahoo ghusaaa'an ahwaa
Then turneth it to russet stubble.

6
سَنُقۡرِئُكَ فَلَا تَنسَىٰٓ
Sanuqri'uka falaa tansaaa
We shall make thee read (O Muhammad) so that thou shalt not forget

7
إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّهُۥ يَعۡلَمُ ٱلۡجَهۡرَ وَمَا يَخۡفَىٰ
Illaa maa shaaa'al laah; innahoo ya'lamul jahra wa maa yakhfaa
Save that which Allah willeth. Lo! He knoweth the disclosed and that which still is hidden;

8
وَنُيَسِّرُكَ لِلۡيُسۡرَىٰ
Wa nu-yassiruka lilyusraa
And We shall ease thy way unto the state of ease.

9
فَذَكِّرۡ إِن نَّفَعَتِ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ
Fazakkir in nafa'atizzikraa
Therefor remind (men), for of use is the reminder.

10
سَيَذَّكَّرُ مَن يَخۡشَىٰ
Sa yazzakkaru maiyakhshaa
He will heed who feareth,

11
وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا ٱلۡأَشۡقَى
Wa yatajannabuhal ashqaa
But the most hapless will flout it,

12
ٱلَّذِي يَصۡلَى ٱلنَّارَ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ
Allazee yaslan Naaral kubraa
He who will be flung to the great Fire

13
ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحۡيَىٰ
Summa laa yamootu feehaa wa laa yahyaa
Wherein he will neither die nor live.

14
قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ
Qad aflaha man tazakkaa
He is successful who groweth,

وَذَكَرَ ٱسۡمَ رَبِّهِۦ فَصَلَّىٰ
Wa zakaras ma Rabbihee fasallaa
And remembereth the name of his Lord, so prayeth,

16
بَلۡ تُؤۡثِرُونَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا
Bal tu'siroonal hayaatad dunyaa
But ye prefer the life of the world

17
وَٱلۡأٓخِرَةُ خَيۡرٞ وَأَبۡقَىٰٓ
Wal Aakhiratu khairunw wa abqaa
Although the Hereafter is better and more lasting.

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَفِي ٱلصُّحُفِ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ
Inna haazaa lafis suhu fil oolaa
Lo! This is in the former scrolls.

صُحُفِ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ
Suhufi Ibraaheema wa Moosaa
The Books of Abraham and Moses.
