Starting Fresh after a Clean Install of Windows – Tips for a Smooth Transition

Windows can fail for a myriad of reasons. It may be a power supply failure, a virus, human error, or just bad luck; perhaps a system file failed. Windows itself is an application, a piece of software, after all. Like your applications may fail due tomsvcr100.dll missing or because of the lack of a similar prerequisite. Windows may also exhibit issues from time to time.

After all, nothing in the world is perfect. This profound statement is doubly so true for software, where often hundreds if not thousands of engineers, developers and designers work across a staggering number of teams, each whittling away at their small piece of software that has to fit into the final product. Each team is an insulated cog in the wheel. So it makes sense that sometimes things may break, and you may have to commence recovery.

Data loss always hurts, but it isn’t prudent to sit and ponder on what could be. But it’s time to get your system up and running so you can continue your work and play at the earliest!

1- Set up your Browser and Sync all accounts

Download your browser! It is your gateway to the internet, and you would need it to download whatever software you need, access your emails and social media, and so on. The best part is that depending on your browser; you may find everything synced already! Assuming you are using Google Chrome with your Google Account, your emails and passwords (if you used the Google Password Syncing option) are already there, and you can quickly set up your applications. Also, say you are unable to run an application, and you find out a file like msvcr100.dll is missing, then that’s the gateway to accessing a website that would get you that file as well.

2- Download essential software according to your work and personal requirements

Install your Office Suite of choice for work or your favourite IDE and other essentials, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader for your PDFs and VLC Media Player for your media consumption. Newer versions of Office Software like Microsoft Office also have accounts and cloud syncing, so there is a good chance that you may be able to recover some portion of the extraordinary effort that you have put in. It may also serve as a precaution against any future data loss.

3- Install any essential backend libraries and software

Aside from software, several other essentials do not come pre-packaged with Windows and are not explicitly displayed as software. This trait may make one think that they are not essential. But if one is not careful, then it is not long before errors start popping up showing a file like msvcr100.dll missing. These essential DLLs or similar files can be obtained from the right website. They are related to the Visual C++ compiler, a core programming framework on which several of the most popular applications have been created.

Similarly, DLL files related to other underlying functions of other software may also be required, relating to audio codecs and rendering libraries for legacy software.

If you take the following steps, your new Windows installation will quickly get up to speed with getting your work done. As always, though, precaution is better than cure; keep data backups on cloud services. Henceforth, you would be able to skip much of the furore and stress of setting up a new instance of Windows on your system. Good luck!
